It is my turn to host the Wednesday Watercolour challenge at Splitcoaststampers.
I picked this watercolour lantern for the challenge, which has the corresponding video found here.
For my painting I watched the video and snipped the picture of his drawing so I could trace it on my watercolour paper. I knew before even trying that I would mess up trying to draw this on my own.
I used some of the same colours, and some are different. For my background I used the Cobalt Blue, then Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) for my darker shade. I used these colours on the lantern as well, along with Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber at the bottom of the lantern, and Cadmium Yellow and Pyrrol Scarlet for the flame area.
Along the bottom under the lantern I used the Cadmium Yellow along with Quinacridone Gold. For the stars on the window I used Dr. Ph Martin's Bleed Proof white watercolour. For the blue starts I used the Phthalo Blue (Red Shade).
It took a couple of layers of colour to get everything how I wanted it. I should have done another layer of the Phthalo Blue on the background around the edges too, but forgot. Next time.
On the Pinecones I used Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber. I also used the Bleed Proof white watercolour along the edges for the snow. I then mixed more of the Bleed Proof and did the snow splatters. I saw in the video that he did this by hand, but that is not happening in my watercolour world.
I think I would like to do another one, as I think it would be better than this one now that I kind of know what I am doing, plus it makes for a nice Christmas Greeting.
